Condo project in pipeline

A plan to convert the old St. Patrick's grammar school on Congress Street into a complex of affordable housing condos is expected to be reviewed by the Planning Board this month.

Westbrook Development Corp. is planning to create 15 units, ranging in size from 660 square feet to 1,125 square feet, in the former Catholic school. The company purchased the school from the Portland diocese last October for $580,000, according to city tax records.

Westbrook Development intends to market the condos to buyers at or below 120% of Portland's median income, which would be $56,770 for one person or $64,820 per couple, according to data from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. The construction should be completed within seven to 10 months after approval, according to the plans. A zoning change to allow the project was endorsed Monday night by the City Council; it will likely go before Planning Board review by the end of the month.

In its submission, Westbrook Development Corp. noted it has completed similar condo conversions in Westbrook at Sebago Moc mill and the Forest Street School.
