Contractors oppose development bill

Contractors and developers at a public hearing yesterday spoke out against a bill that would change Maine's site development regulations to combat sprawl.

Members of the construction industry, including the Associated General Contractors of Maine and the Maine Municipal Association, said the bill would restrict development in Maine during an already slow time and drastically change property values, according to the Sun Journal. The bill, drafted by the Department of Environmental Protection, would encourage concentrating growth. But opponents at the Natural Resources Committee hearing said changes would limit development in rural communities and cause some property values to rise drastically and threaten the future of projects already in the works.

But the DEP says the bill would make the permitting process more efficient. Other groups in support of it include the Maine Association of Planners and the Maine Audubon Society, according to the paper.
