Cooke Aquaculture to hire another 50

Cooke Aquaculture has opened its new salmon processing plant in Machiasport and already plans to surpass its expected number of employees.

Blacks Harbour, N.B.-based Cooke, which operates in Maine as True North Maine Inc., announced in July that it would reopen the Machiasport plant in early 2009 and employ approximately 80 people, according to The Quoddy Tides. However, the company had the plant running by Nov. 12 and plans to hire an additional 50 employees -- on top of the 53 employees already working at the plant -- in late January, the paper reported.

The plant, which Cooke acquired in 2004 from Atlantic Salmon of Maine, currently processes 20,000 pounds of salmon a day. It makes salmon fillets for customers in the U.S. market, the paper said.
