Cost-cutting leads to job losses at MDI Hospital

Mount Desert Island Hospital has cut nine jobs as part of a cost-cutting measure, though several of the full-time positions are vacant. The cuts are part of the hospital's budget for the next fiscal year, which begins today, according to the Ellsworth American.

The hospital has seen rising patient volumes over the last several years, but anticipates little growth for the next year. The hospital is also seeing rising costs, flat revenue and reduced reimbursements from the state for MaineCare services. MDI Hospital expects the amount of free care it provides to rise over last year's $4 million.

The hospital has about 500 employees.
