County jail to become grist mill
Somerset County Commissioners yesterday unanimously approved the sale of the old county jail in Skowhegan to a grist mill operator.
Somerset Grist Mill LLC bought the century-old former jail for $65,000, along with a small adjoining parking lot currently being leased by the nearby Strand Cinema, according to the Morning Sentinel. Somerset Grist Mill LLC owners Amber Lambke and Michael Scholz plan to turn the 14,000-square-foot jail into a grist mill operation that would include a bakery, restaurant and small retail store where local farmers and artists could sell their wares. The operation would mill locally grown wheat into flour, and farmers in Somerset County have already signed on to the project, Lambke told the paper. The pair hopes to start operations by August and create 12 jobs.
Lambke and Scholz proposed the grist mill nearly one year ago, when the Somerset County Jail first went on the market with an asking price of $200,000, according to the paper.
