As the economy continues to dip and many people watch their 401(k)s dwindle, the number of local crimes seems to be on the rise. Here’s a roundup of the latest heists:
Earlier this month, an Alabama federal court charged Maurice Subilia, former president of Fiber Materials Inc. in Biddeford, with bribing two officials from the U.S. Army’s Space and Missile Defense Command with payments of at least $1.2 million over four years in return for contracts for companies that Subilia, his friends and family established, including Fiber Materials. If found guilty, Subilia could face as many as 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the bribery charge, and five years in prison and another $250,000 fine for conspiracy to bribe a public official, according to the Portland Press Herald. Fiber Materials has also sued Subilia for defrauding the company during the 30 years he acted as president, alleging that he set up other companies, bought Fiber Materials composites products and marked them up to sell to other customers, according to the paper.
A man in a black ski mask recently robbed Savings Bank of Maine in Hallowell, making off with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to VillageSoup. The man walked into the bank — only a few doors down from the police station — holding a firearm and demanding cash. Police wouldn’t say how much money he stole, but are looking into whether this robbery is connected to a Nov. 18 robbery at the Savings Bank of Maine branch in Augusta.
Maine State Police and New England officials are on the lookout for an unmarked truck hauling about $25,000 worth of eggs, stolen from DeCoster Egg Farms in Turner, operated by Quality Egg Farm of New England. The nearly 260,000 eggs, destined for Asia, were in cartons printed in English and Chinese and likely are bound for Chinese sections of Boston and New York, according to police.
