Great Island Marina, which has 65 boat slips and 50 moorings on Orr’s Cove in Harpswell, has been acquired by Safe Harbor Marinas, a Dallas-based network of boating facilities.
A Tuesday news release did not disclose terms of the sale, but said the company has a capital plan to make the marina "even better."
Great Island has been owned and operated since 2005 by Steve and Stephanie Rowe, and employs 45 marine technicians and other staff, according to its website. The marina and boat yard cover 13 acres and includes 800 feet of waterfront. Great Island provides a range of rigging, mechanical and other boat services, as well as storage for up to 220 vessels in 76,000 square feet of indoor space.
With the acquisition of Great Island, and of another marina in Alabama, Safe Harbor now owns and operates 100 marinas across 22 states. Great Island is Safe Harbor's first marina in Maine, but the private company has over two dozen of them in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
The Safe Harbor network is the largest in the world, according to the release, and serves about 45,000 boaters.
"This is an exciting milestone for our team and our members," said Safe Harbor CEO Baxter Underwood. "You can now stay at Safe Harbor properties when boating from the sandy Gulf Coast all the way up to the rocky shores of Maine, and everywhere in between. We're thrilled to add these high-quality marinas to our portfolio."
