Data breach hits Day's Jewelers

A security breach at Waterville-based Day's Jewelers has potentially exposed thousands of credit and debit card numbers to hackers.

The company, which has five locations in Maine and one in New Hampshire, confirmed yesterday that hackers breached its computer system and possibly obtained customers' information, according to the Kennebec Journal. An exact number of customers affected wasn't available. The Maine Credit Union League said more than 1,000 of its members who made purchases in November and December reported fraudulent activity on their cards, and John Murphy, president of the league, told The Associated Press the total number of affected members is "likely over 2,000."

The Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit is investigating the breach, and Day's has hired a computer forensics firm to identify what information was compromised, according to The AP.
