The Maine Heritage Policy Center has released data showing that payroll and benefits for University of Maine employees grew 29% from 2003 to 2010.
The Portland-based think tank published the university's salary, benefits and stipend data on its website, MaineOpenGov.org, which tracks state and public spending. According to a press release, total payroll and benefits costs of UMaine employees rose from $258.5 million in 2003 to $333.1 million last year. The number of employees making more than $100,000 grew from 399 people in 2003 to 1,018 in 2010. The center also released data on the university's stipend and travel expenses. "The University of Maine is a major recipient of tax dollars and tuition dollars and a key public institution in our state," said Sam Adolphsen, director of open government. "It's important that the operations of the university are transparent and their finances are available for everyone to see." According to MHPC, in-state tuition and fees at the University of Maine System institutions rose an average of 35% from 2004-2009.
The center's efforts recently led to the release of salary information at MaineHousing. The agency last week released salary information based on job position in response to a Freedom of Access Act request filed by MHPC. MaineHousing Executive Director Dale McCormick, who made $101,520 in 2010, said the agency's salaries are 15% below the average market salaries for the same positions.
