Deadline today for budget plan

Lawmakers are under the gun today to approve a plan to fill the $190 million hole in the state's two-year budget, or face a unilateral reduction in government spending by Governor John Baldacci.

Since discussions over the weekend did not result in an agreement over how to fill the budget hole, lawmakers need to act before tomorrow, the beginning of the current fiscal year's fourth quarter, to make sure a revised state spending plan is in place before June 30, the last day of this fiscal year, according to the Portland Press Herald.

If no plan is enacted by tomorrow, Baldacci will issue a $27 million curtailment order, his second in recent months, to force the state to temporarily slow its rate of spending, according to a press release. Baldacci issued a $38 million curtailment order on Dec. 18.
