Decline of Maine's paper mills hurting logging elsewhere

Vermont’s logging industry is taking a hit from Maine’s shrinking paper industry, the Times Argus of Barre, Vt., reported Jan. 3.

“A significant market that is drawing wood from all over the region is going to go away,” Michael Snyder, commissioner of the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation, told the Times Argus. “That represents a direct and significant challenge for the workforce.”

There are fewer than half the number of mills in Maine as there were in 1980. Nationwide, there are 326 mills versus 426 in 2005.

In mid-November, paper mill managers, loggers, paper workers, sawmill operators and policy-makers met in an all-day summit in Bangor to identify both near- and long-term solutions to ensure the pulp and paper industry's future in Maine.
