The No. 2 restaurant in the country, says Food & Wine magazine, is far from dining destinations like New York City and Los Angeles — and even 150 miles from Portland.
Aragosta at Goose Cove, in Deer Isle, ranked second among the 20 best eateries in the gourmet publication's 2024 Global Tastemakers awards, announced Tuesday.
"Chef and owner Devin Finigan’s seasonal farm-to-table restaurant in coastal Maine is over 10 years old, but it’s still among the most coveted places to eat in New England," Food & Wine wrote in its review of Aragosta.
The restaurant ranked only behind No. 1, Anajak Thai, in Los Angeles. Third place went to Semma, in New York.
Finigan, who is the daughter of a chef and worked for years at kitchens on the Blue Hill Peninsula, opened Aragosta at a Stonington location in 2013. Six years later, she purchased the Goose Cove property. It now houses the restaurant, as well as nine cottages and several suites for overnight guest stays.
Finigan was nominated in 2020 for a James Beard Award.
In addition to its restaurant rankings, Food & Wine named 10 U.S. cities as the top destinations for food and drinks. Portland, no stranger to such lists, came in No. 9, just ahead of Honolulu and just behind Washington, D.C. New York ranked No. 1.
Portland, the magazine said, is "quickly becoming one of the premiere culinary centers of the Northeast."
The city also ranked No. 6 among U.S. cities with the best bakeries. Food & Wine ranked Boston as No. 5 on that list, and Columbus, Ohio, was No. 7.
Winners of the Food & Wine Global Tastemakers awards were selected from a vote of 180 international food and travel journalists, whose nominees were then vetted by a 17-member expert panel and the magazine's editors.
Food & Wine, which began publication in 1978, has roughly 950,000 subscribers worldwide.
