A provision that would allow the military to transfer the Brunswick Naval Air Station property to the redevelopment authority at little or no cost is nearing final approval in Congress.
U.S. House and Senate negotiators have agreed on a final 2010 Defense Authorization Bill that would direct the military to turn over closing base properties to local redevelopment groups for no cost or below market value if those groups can demonstrate economic hardship, according to The Times Record. However, the provision does not require the little or no-cost transfer.
Steve Levesque, executive director of the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, has long voiced the necessity for this provision and told the paper the bill "changes things a lot."
But it's not a done deal. The 2010 Defense Authorization Bill must still receive approval by the full House and Senate, which is slated to happen next week, according to a press release from Rep. Chellie Pingree's office. President Obama, who has opposed no-cost or below-market-rate conveyances, must sign the final bill, as well, Sen. Susan Collins told the paper.
