Dems retake Legislature
Democrats won enough seats Tuesday to retake both houses of the Maine Legislature while the fate of four seats around the state remain undecided due to recount requests.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Democrats are confirmed to win 20 seats and are leading in another four races. They need to pick up one more seat where they are leading to claim a majority.
In the House, the paper reported that Democrats needed 76 wins in Tuesday's voting. As of Friday, 86 seats had been called for Democrats.
Republicans counted 14 victories in the Senate and 60 in the House.
One big pickup for the Republicans was House District 1, covering Eagle Lake. Vote tallies showed the Legislature's longest serving member, Rep. John Martin, D-Eagle Lake, behind Republican Allen Michaeal Nadeau by a 300-vote margin, according to the BDN.
In one of Maine's races that drew national attention, former Gov. Angus King held an early lead in his bid to replace Sen. Olympia Snowe as one of Maine's representatives to the U.S. Senate.
In the race for Maine's two U.S. House seats, both incumbent Democrats Chellie Pingree and Mike Michaud claimed wins.
