Dielectric to close Raymond plant, lay off 55

A Raymond radio and television antenna manufacturer will close its doors and lay off its employees after 60 years of operating in Maine.

The Bangor Daily News reported the Charlotte, N.C.-based SPX Communication Technology, formerly known as Dielectric Communications, will shut down its Raymond plant June 29.

The company is one of the area's two largest employers, the paper reported; the other is Sabre Yachts.

SPX, which acquired Dielectric in 2001, decided to discontinue its entire broadcast radio and television line citing "extremely difficult global economic conditions in the broadcast marketplace," according to a letter obtained by the trade magazine Broadcast Engineering, reported the BDN.

The company was founded in 1942 to develop transmission lines for wartime radio systems and company founder Charles "Doc" Brown moved the company to his hometown of Raymond in 1954.
