Although buying and selling these days often takes place on websites like Craigslist or eBay, the physical handoff of goods and money often takes place in person to avoid the high expenses and the occasional hassle of shipping a product.
So the police department in Paris is providing their property as a safe trading zone, in keeping with the new trend, the Sun Journal reported.
"A person could get robbed," Paris Interim Police Chief Jeffrey Lange told the Sun Journal. "What if it was a female who could be sexually assaulted? That's something we should be concerned with, and that's why I'm offering this service. I would like to be more proactive and prevent things, than reactive and worry about the criminal element then."
The police station’s safe trading zone would consist of its heavily watched parking lot and entrance lobby, which is under video surveillance.
A similar space exists in Auburn. With the police station in the basement of Auburn Hall, there's plenty of space for people to meet and to safely complete their transactions, the paper reported.
"I heard about this (idea) from word-of-mouth from police chiefs that I work with," Lange told the paper. “And it's more community service that we want to offer to the citizens of Paris."
