San Francisco-based digital health firm Grand Rounds said it's on track to go from 100 employees in Lewiston to more than 200 by the end of this year, well ahead of schedule.
The company, founded in 2011 as ConsultingMD, uses its technology to vet more than 96% of all active specialists and primary-care providers in the United States. Out of a small subset of doctors with top marks in each specialty, it handpicks the best qualified for each patient.
It also collects and digitizes medical records, manages appointments, and employs doctors and nurses to answer patients' questions, review files and help with quality assurance.
The company brought a small team to Auburn before moving across the Androscoggin River to Lewiston in spring 2017.
It originally set out to create 150 jobs in Maine's second-largest city by 2022 and is already up to 100.
On Tuesday, it said it's on track to exceed 200 by the end of 2019 as it quickly outgrows its space inside the Bates Mill Complex.
Danielle Snow, the company's senior vice president of patient care, told Mainebiz by phone on Tuesday that the hiring plans are driven by growing membership. In Maine, it works with employers that include Dead River Co. as well as national retailers with operations here, which include Walmart, Target, Home Depot and Lowe's.
Asked about the company's recruiting strategy, she said the company was open to hiring people currently living in Maine as well as those outside the state.
"We're hoping to make sure that we're helping Maine grow, and bringing more opportunities into Maine, said Snow, a Mainer who splits her time between Lewiston and the West Coast.
But she also admitted that it's a tough climate, with record unemployment not just in Maine but nationally. "We're fortunate in that we do stand out as a great employer to work for," she said.
Besides attractive compensation and benefits packages, she cited the company as a fun and engaging place to work, in an open airy space at the Bates Mill Complex, with snacks available during the day and people getting together to play games at lunch.
A recent employee survey cited in Tuesday's press release found that 98% of employees in the Lewiston location said they were proud to work for Grand Rounds and 92% would recommend Grand Rounds as a great place to work.
The Lewiston office is currently recruiting for the positions of care coordinators and record specialists, as well as managers in those areas.
Snow told Mainebiz that the firm expects to grow beyond its current space at the Bates Mill Complex, which she estimates to be around 22,000 square feet, and is working to see what expansion opportunities there are within the complex.
"We hope to continue to be there," she said.
Grand Rounds is headquartered in San Francisco and also has an office in Reno, Nev.
