Dirigo gets new carrier

The DirigoChoice program will continue with a new health insurance partner, the Governor's Office of Health Policy and Finance said yesterday.

Beginning Jan. 1, DirigoChoice will be carried by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, a nonprofit insurer based in Wellesley, Mass., with an office in Portland. Final contract negotiations are currently underway and the partnership awaits approvals from the Bureau of Insurance, according to a press release. Trish Riley, director of the health policy and finance office, said in the release that the partnership "will bring competiton back to the health insurance market in Maine."

On Wednesday, DirigoChoice's previous carrier, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, announced that it would not renew its contract with the state's subsidized health program, which covers about 15,000 Mainers. The Dirigo Health Agency has established a link on its website with more information on the transition.
