Dirigo Labs, BerryDunn team on cleantech bootcamp

Dirigo Labs in Waterville is joining with Portland-based accounting firm BerryDunn to host a one-day bootcamp for entrepreneurs in the fast-growing clean technology sector.

The inaugural event, scheduled for Sept. 18 at BerryDunn's headquarters in Portland, aims to give participants a grounding in financial and tax strategy needed to take their businesses to the next level. There will also be plenty of networking opportunities.

“Our goal is to provide these entrepreneurs with the tools and connections they need to succeed, and this event is a key step in that direction,” said Emalee Hall, assistant director of innovation programming and partnerships at Dirigo Labs, a business startup accelerator.

Dirigo Labs, led by Managing Director Susan Ruhlin, boosted its in-house cleantech expertise with the contractual hiring of two entrepreneurs-in-residence to help drive innovation.

Ruhlin told Mainebiz that while the bootcamp is planned as a single event, "we recognize the ongoing need for financial training, so we were open to organizing additional sessions if there is sufficient interest."

She also said the program is designed to benefit founders at all stages of development.

BerryDunn, led by CEO Sarah Belliveau, topped a list of Maine's largest accounting firms in the 2024 Mainebiz Book of Lists. Firms were ranked by 2022 revenue.

At the Sept. 18 half-day event in Waterville, BerryDunn experts will offer insights into finance, tax issues and growth strategies. The sessions will be complemented by interactive workshops featuring hands-on exercises and case studies.

“The Cleantech Bootcamp is more than just an educational event — it’s an opportunity for founders to gain the critical knowledge and skills they need to navigate the complexities of the cleantech industry, said Berry Dunn Senior Manager Erik Olson. “We’re excited to share our expertise and help these innovators drive meaningful change."

The organizers said they're trying to foster collaboration and idea exchange at the event, helping participants gain confidence in securing funds and a clearer vision for their businesses.

The event is scheduled to run from 8:30 until noon. "We are prepared to accommodate 30 to 40 attendees comfortably," Ruhlin said. "If demand exceeds expectations, we will explore options to expand capacity."
