Domtar today said it would reopen its idled pulp mill in Baileyville, bringing 300 employees back to work, a day after it was cited for federal safety violations.
On the upside, the Washington County pulp mill intends to resume operations at its Woodland facility on June 22, according to a release from the company. Nearly 300 workers who have been jobless since March will be called back to work. Company officials said global supply of pulp has diminished, creating a better market for its product and the tax benefits of using alternative biofuel has enhanced the profitability of the mill, which will be closely monitored.
On the down side, the company faces $107,000 in fines for 29 alleged safety violations identified by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration, according to the Bangor Daily News. Domtar officials declined to comment on the specific allegations, which encompass a number of hazardous conditions found during an OSHA inspection in November 2008, according to the paper.
