DOT picks air carriers for rural service
The U.S. Department of Transportation has selected Alaska-based Peninsula Airways to take over service at the Presque Isle airport. PenAir and Cape Air will jointly provide service at the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport.
The two companies were among four carriers seeking to take over service at the rural airports previously supplied by Colgan Air. PenAir will use a 34-passenger aircraft to operate 19 weekly round trips between Northern Maine Regional Airport and Boston, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, ranking member of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee. Massachusetts-based Cape Air will provide service between Bar Harbor and Boston, running three daily flights from September to May and one flight between Memorial Day and Labor Day. PenAir will provide two additional daily flights during the summer months. Cape Air services Maine's other two Essential Air Service airports in Augusta and Rockland, which receive federal subsidies for providing air transportation in rural areas.
Colgan Air in September announced that it would petition the DOT to end its service between the airports and Boston and Plattsburg, N.Y., as part of a strategic move to reduce service at the Boston hub.
