Maine and New Hampshire transportation officials have officially awarded the contract to replace the Memorial Bridge to Chicago-based Archer Western Corp. and Kansas City-based HNTB Corp., which has an office in Westbrook.
With Maine's signoff, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation yesterday issued the notice of intent to award for the replacement of the bridge that spans the two states, according to Foster's Daily Democrat. Transportation officials announced last month that Archer Western was selected to lead the project with the highest bid of $81.4 million, but with the shortest completion time. HNTB, an engineering firm, will design the bridge. The team plans to open the new bridge in July 2013, one year ahead of schedule. Maine DOT also awarded HNTB a nearly $6 million contract for work to rehabilitate the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge that also connects the two states, with work on that bridge expected to begin in 2014.
Transportation officials in both states closed the Memorial Bridge in July, one year earlier than anticipated and a full year before construction is expected to start on the new bridge. The project has received $20 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
