Doug Jones, interim CEO of Down East Community Hospital in Machias, has resigned abruptly after having led the hospital through a pivotal transition.
In a phone interview with the Bangor Daily News, Jones refused to go into detail as to what happened between him and the hospital's board of trustees, which has begun its search for an interim CEO. “I gave the hospital five good years,” he told the newspaper, adding that he wishes to spend more time with his family.
Jones’ resignation is effective immediately, according to hospital spokeswoman Julie Hixon.
The newspaper reported Jones became the hospital's interim CEO after it was placed under receivership and under the emergency control of Brewer-based Eastern Maine Health System by the state in 2009. The receivership, which was originally prompted by a state investigation that found a number of safety-related deficiencies, lasted over two years, ending in 2011 when the hospital was given back control of its own operations.
“I am proud that I have accomplished what I set out to do when I first came to DECH in the summer of 2009 to see DECH safely through the receivership and to set it on a course for future success,” Jones said in a statement obtained by the BDN. “Although I am unsure what the next chapter in my life holds for me, I am looking forward to taking some time off to consider that and to spend more time with my family and friends.”
