Downeast Institute in Beals hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday to celebrate the opening of its new $6.6 million expansion that includes a state-of-the-art shellfish hatchery.
Downeast Institute in Beals hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday to celebrate the grand opening of its new $6.6 million expansion that includes a state-of-the-art shellfish hatchery.
In a news release, Downeast Institute stated that with the expansion it is poised to serve marine scientists from throughout the world in addition to boosting Maine’s marine research capacities.
Downeast Institute’s eight new specialty laboratories include a large ecology/physiology lab with running seawater, a quarantine lab and a climate-controlled lab. These facilities will assist scientists and entrepreneurs as they seek to better understand the relationships between marine organisms and their environment.
The new residence hall expands access to Downeast Institute’s campus and provides accommodations for up to 20 students, interns and visiting scholars.
The expansion of the hatchery facility nearly doubles the space available to produce clams, quahogs, oysters, surf clams, lobsters, mussels and razor clams for fisheries enhancement, research and development.
Saturday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony was followed by tours of the new facility and the 10th Annual Shellfish Field Day.
