Drowning cited as pilot's cause of death

The state's medical examiner determined that Telford Allen II, founder of Telford Aviation Services, died from accidental drowning after the floatplane he was piloting flipped over in Moosehead Lake Sunday during an attempted landing.

Maine State Police said the plane flipped because its wheels were down at the time of the attempted landing, according to Maine Public Broadcasting Network. A passenger in the plane, Natalie Holmes-Moody, was treated for injuries at Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital in Greenville and released.

Allen, a well-respected businessman, founded Telford Aviation Services in 1982 in Waterville as a charter flight company, then relocated it to Bangor International Airport in the 1990s. As the Telford Group, the company became nationally known for airplane parts sales and maintenance.
