Drug settlement brings Maine $1.2M

Maine will receive over $1.2 million in a federal settlement with drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline after allegations that the company illegally misrepresented the cardiovascular risks and safety profile of the diabetes drug, Avandia.

In total, the company agreed to pay $90 million to 37 states, according to a press release from state Attorney General William Schneider. Maine filed its complaint in Kennebec County Superior Court on Nov. 15, the release states.

As part of the settlement, GSK also agreed to change how it markets and promotes diabetes drugs. The investigation was led by attorneys general in Oregon and Illinois with participation from a committee of 35 other states, including Maine.
