Dunlap to lead sportsman's alliance

The Sportsman's Alliance of Maine has tapped former Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap as its interim executive director, less than six months after hiring a former Florida legislator to lead the group.

Dunlap served on SAM's board of directors for about 18 months before stepping down recently when the board began talking about hiring him as executive director, according to the Kennebec Journal. Dunlap said the board sought a change in leadership in order to take the group "in a certain direction," while Jim Gorman, president of the board, said in a statement that the group "needed someone who would have instant credibility with the powers that be in Augusta." In October, SAM hired Tim Bell to replace longtime director George Smith.

Dunlap said his goals for the group are to refocus on its core mission and expand its membership, which is currently about 12,000. It was unclear when he would be named permanent executive director. Dunlap lost his post as secretary of state in November when Republicans gained control of the Legislature and nominated Charlie Summers.
