East Millinocket paper mill to restart

The Katahdin Paper Co. LLC in East Millinocket will restart work on May 5 with enough orders to run for the rest of the month.

The company shut down the mill April 10 and furloughed three-quarters of its 491 workers due to a lack of orders and routine maintenance. But mill officials yesterday told the Bangor Daily News they will start running two of the mill's paper machines on an alternating basis. The No. 6 machine, which makes telephone directory-grade paper, will run for a week starting May 5, then the mill's No. 5 machine, which makes newsprint, will start up again on May 11.

Rick Grunthaler, the mill's human resources manager, told the paper it was still not determined how many workers would return.
