Eastport, Searsport on track to export biomass fuel to EU
Maine could soon tap into the $684 million industry of exporting wood chips, which are used to fuel biomass plants, to the European Union.
The Portland Press Herald reported that Eastport could be the first community to begin exporting wood chips in 2017, where export plans have been in development since 2009. The port authority of the Washington County city has been working with an equipment manufacturer that has been building machinery that can make the wood chips meet European standards.
In the town of Searsport, Maine Woods Biomass Exports LLC, has already started making wood products, including railroad ties, which are being shipped by rail to Quebec — an early step in being able to ship logs through Searsport to India at the start of 2017 — and wood chips to Europe in early 2018, according to the Press Herald.
