Educare center opens in Waterville

A unique early childhood education center, the first of its kind in New England, has opened in Waterville.

The 36,000-square-foot, $9 million Educare Central Maine opened last week, nearly two years after it was first announced that the city had been chosen to host the region's first such center, according to the Morning Sentinel. The first rural Educare center serves more than 200 children from birth to age 5, many of whom come from low-income families, and employs 63. The center received $5 million in private contributions, including $3 million from Doris Buffett, sister of billionaire investor Warren Buffett, and $2 million from local philanthropists Bill and Joan Alfond. It also received $2 million in federal stimulus funds.

The center, which aims to boost school preparedness in young children, will be featured on the ABC News program "20/20," according to the paper.
