The federal Medicare program is fining eight hospitals in Maine for their infection and complication rates.
The Sun Journal reported that the eight hospitals will lose 1% of their Medicare payments for the fiscal year ending September 2016 because their rates of infections and complications were in the bottom 25% of hospitals nationwide.
The hospitals that are facing fines are MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth, Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine Medical Center in Portland, Mercy Hospital in Portland and York Hospital in York.
Across the country, 758 hospitals will be penalized an estimated $364 million in Medicare payments. It is not clear how much the individual hospitals in Maine will be penalized.
This is the second year the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has fined hospitals for safety scores.
