Eight businesses in rural Maine communities are receiving a total of $190,000 in federal grants and loans for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development office announced Monday that 540 rural businesses nationwide will receive funding through its Rural Energy for America Program, one of the Obama administration’s efforts to strengthen the country’s energy sector.
“These loan guarantees and grants will have far-reaching impacts nationwide, particularly in the rural communities where these projects are located,” Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a prepared statement. “Investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency will continue the unprecedented increase in home-grown energy sources and American energy independence we’ve seen in recent years. This is creating jobs, providing new economic opportunities and leading the way to a more secure energy future.”
The federal program awarded the following:
• A $84,663 grant to Jasper Wyman & Son Inc. in Milbridge for the purchase and installation of a compressed natural gas boiler to replace two oil-fired boilers.
• A $25,654 grant to recreation company North Country Rivers in Bingham for the purchase and installation of additional solar panels to assist with future growth.
• A $9,675 grant to Wiswell Farm Greenhouse in Orrington for the purchase and installation of a solar panel system to meet future energy demand.
• A $11,196 grant to Dubois Farm in Madawaska for the purchase and installation of a solar panel system to meet future energy demand.
• A $25,023 grant to Longlead Lumber Inc. in Berwick for the purchase and installation of a solar panel system, expected to provide 20% of total energy demands.
• A $17,500 grant to Daigle & Houlton in Fort Kent to replace an oil-fired boiler with a dual propane boiler system.
• A $4,961 grant to the Flying Goat Farm in Acton for the purchase and installation of a solar panel system, as part of the farm’s goal to solely use renewable energy.
• A $5,750 grant to accounting firm Madeline Tomlin Associates in Belfast for the purchase and installation of a solar panel system. The business’s owners, Duke and Madeline Tomlin, also received a $5,608 grant for various energy efficiency improvements, including new windows and insulation.
