The five Maine Maritime Academy graduates who lost their lives on the cargo ship El Faro are being honored on a plaque now hanging at DiMillo's restaurant on the Portland waterfront.
WCSH6 reported that the Propeller Club in Portland dedicated the plaque on Oct. 1, a year after the ship and its crew were lost.
"This loss was so overwhelming," said Bill York, president of the Propeller Club, whose members comprise commercial mariners. The club holds regular meetings at DiMillo’s."It's nice to have a place where you can come and look at this plaque and honor these people for their dedicated duty."
In all, 33 people lost their lives when the ship sank during Hurricane Joaquin. A memorial also was held in Jacksonville, Fla., El Faro’s last port of departure.
Maine Maritime Academy in Castine trained five of the mariners lost, including four who lived in Maine, according to the Bangor Daily News: Capt. Michael Davidson of Windham, Danielle Randolph of Rockland, Michael Holland of Wilton and Dylan Meklin of Rockland. The fifth MMA graduate, Mitchell Kuflik, lived in Brooklyn, N.Y.
The Bangor Daily News reported that family members of crew lost were getting matching tattoos to remember loved ones.
The Propeller Club also dedicated a plaque to Capt. San Juan “Sandy” Dunbar, a longtime Portland pilot.
