Eliot call center downsizes

A call center in Eliot that opened in March 2008 has had to lay off almost a third of its workers.

CenterPoint Teleservices let go 60 of its 220 workers last Friday, according to Seacoast Online. The company handles incoming sales and customer service calls for a range of businesses from health insurers to banks and online marketers. CEO Michael McNaboe told Seacoast Online that his clients are struggling financially because they rely on the credit of consumers, and consumers aren't borrowing as much these days.

He said, though, that he hopes to weather the downturn and rehire his workers at some point. "I don't have a crystal ball. I know we don't plan to go anywhere. Our intention is to restore the business to profitability and then expand," he said.
