For the first time in 10 years, Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth recorded a revenue loss, as other hospitals in Maine report layoffs.
The hospital took a $1.4 million revenue loss during the last fiscal year, a loss President and CEO Charlie Therrien attributed in part to outstanding Medicaid payments from the state, according to news channel WCSH 6. The state owes the hospital nearly $14 million in payments over the past three years. The news channel reported that the state owes Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems about $90 million in back Medicaid, or MaineCare, payments to its seven hospitals, and St. Joseph Hospital is owed about $2.3 million through the third quarter of 2007.
Central Maine Healthcare in Lewiston in September laid off 35 employees as part of a cost-cutting measure, citing $56 million the state owes it in back MaineCare payments. Last week, Pen Bay Healthcare in Rockport cut 19 positions, a move attributed in part to $7 million owed in MaineCare reimbursements.
