Emera Maine to complete installation of new cable to Deer Isle

After Memorial Day weekend, Emera Maine crews and contractors will begin installing a new cable through the bridge from Sedgwick to Little Deer Isle. The project, which aims to ensure reliable service to Deer Isle, should be completed within two weeks.

Motorists will see lane closures and one-way alternating traffic enforced on the bridge from sunrise to sunset Monday through Thursday to ensure workers’ safety. Emera Maine advised motorists in a news release to "please plan ahead, exercise caution and watch for signs when traveling in the area."

Travel by pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles transporting wide loads greater than 10 feet also will be restricted Monday through Thursday. Emera Maine crews and contractors will work with the Maine Department of Transportation and Department of Motor Vehicles to minimize traffic delays and facilitate transport of permitted wide loads across the bridge during the project, including on Fridays.

No service interruptions are expected in connection with this work.

The project, which began last fall with the installation of conduit through the bridge, will enable Emera Maine to provide more reliable service to the Deer Isle-Stonington area through the installation of a redundant electrical line and improved equipment. Other efforts to improve service also include more tree trimming, removal of unhealthy trees with the potential to fall and cause outages, and use of more robust electrical wire.
