Emera makes case for $175M in transmission projects in northern Maine

Last week, the Maine Public Utilities Commission began its investigation into Emera Maine‘s plan to complete 32 transmission projects over the next five years, expected to cost $175 million and raise electricity bills for its customers.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the projects would more than double the transmission portion of bills for customers in Emera Maine’s northern Aroostook County service area and increase transmission costs by about 75%  in its Bangor Hydro Electric service district.

The commission said the focus of the investigation into the company’s transmission system maintenance, which began with a workshop Thursday, will be to examine how Emera Maine got to the point where such a large part of its transmission system would need to be rebuilt in such a short period of time.

Company officials said more than 60%  of all proposed projects are driven primarily by the age and condition of its transmission lines, the BDN reported. More than half of Emera's roughly 350 miles of northern Maine Public Service district transmission lines are more than 40 years old, company officials said.
