Emergency law will help truckers

Governor John Baldacci yesterday signed emergency legislation to loosen weight restrictions for logging trucks.

The new law will temporarily allow trucks hauling forest products to increase their legal load by five percent, or from a limit of 100,000 pounds per load to 105,000, according to Portland news station WCSH 6. Loggers hurt by the rising price of diesel fuel will be able to save an additional $200 to $800 a week thanks to the bill, the television news station reported.

The new legislation takes effect immediately and will expire April 1. Baldacci says he is also working on emergency legislation to ease the tax burden for truckers hauling forest products, according to a press release.
