EMMC nurses to strike

The nurses' union at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor is expected to announce a one-day strike today after contract talks failed with the hospital.

The Maine State Nurses Association at EMMC has been negotiating a new contract since July, as their current, three-year contract was set to expire yesterday. But the union last night rejected the final contract offer from EMMC, according to the Bangor Daily News. By law, the union must give the hospital 10 days notice before walking out.

The union wants to create a professional practice committee of direct-care staff nurses that would monitor nurse-patient staffing levels at EMMC. The hospital has said it would create such a committee of nurses and nurse managers, but the union says it doesn't want managers involved so nurses would feel free to complain about working conditions, the paper said.

The union is expected to hold an emergency bargaining session with EMMC tomorrow, but could strike by the end of next week, the paper said.
