The federal Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday announced $1.2 million for cleanup and redevelopment projects at contaminated industrial sites in Maine, as part of an overall grant package totaling more than $4.3 million to sites across New England, the Portland Press Herald reported.
The supplemental funds are part of $13.2 million nationally the EPA made available under its brownfields revolving loan fund.
Curt Spalding, regional administrator of the EPA New England office, presented more than $2.35 million in brownfields funding Wednesday to six communities and groups in Maine for assessment and cleanup of contaminated sites.
The former Lincoln Mill in Biddeford is one of the sites receiving attention. Most of the $500,000 the Southern Maine Planning & Development Commission received will go toward completing that cleanup, Paul Schumacher, executive director of the commission told the newspaper. The former mills is in the midst of a renovation by developer Tim Harrington to turn it into a mixed-use complex with a hotel, apartments and restaurants.
Brownfields funding will also go to the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments, Berwick, Lubec, Penobscot Indian Nation, Portland Harbor Commission and Rockland.
