EPA grant funds $1.2M in diesel conversions

A federal grant will provide the state's environmental regulators $1.39 million to fund the replacement of diesel engines in boats and buses in an effort to reduce emissions and air pollution.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection announced the award in a press release, stating that U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant will help purchase new diesel marine engines for two McAlister towing tug boats operating in Portland Harbor and will replace diesel engines in four Portland school buses with compressed natural gas systems.

The grant will cover half the cost of each new tug boat engine and one-quarter of each school bus engine replacement.

The conversions are expected to reduce nitrogen oxide, particulate matter and carbon dioxide emissions by 35 tons and reduce diesel fuel consumption by a combined 38,536 gallons annually.

The award was part of a $30 million EPA program that awarded one other grant in New England, for a ferry project in New London, Conn.
