EPA settles with two Maine companies over hazardous waste
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that two Maine companies agreed to pay fines and come into compliance with state and federal hazardous waste laws.
Tasman Leather Group LLC, a tannery in Hartland, was fined $48,000 and agreed to correct all violations of the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and State of Maine Hazardous Waste Management Rules, and maintain certified compliance with the requirements.
GVS North America, a manufacturing company in Sanford, recently came into compliance with state and federal hazardous waste laws and agreed to pay $63,036 to settle charges of violations of hazardous waste regulations by EPA’s New England office.
“These settlements improve compliance with important federal and state laws that protect Maine communities, facility employees and first responders from hazardous waste exposure,” said Alexandra Dunn, the EPA’s New England regional administrator. “The companies' work with EPA and steps taken to return to compliance will help us together to advance public and worker health and safety.”
