Ex-Auburn mayor to run for governor

Former Auburn Mayor John Jenkins on Friday filed his intention to run for governor as an Independent, write-in candidate.

Jenkins, who won as a write-in candidate for mayor in 2007, previously said he would run for governor if his group on social media site Facebook had 5,000 supporters by Oct. 13. As of Sept. 20, the group had 2,882 members, which he said was enough support to push him to officially run, according to the Sun Journal. He told the paper that about 2,300 people have also signed unofficial petitions saying they would support him at the polls. His two previous attempts to run for governor in 2002 and 2006 did not garner enough support.

Jenkins also served as mayor of Lewiston in the 1990s and has served as a state senator.
