Ex-business owner pleads guilty to fraud charges
Mohdi Ali, the former director of a home health care business in Lewiston, yesterday pleaded guilty to using false information to obtain MaineCare benefits. His business, Decent Home Care Inc., was raided by federal agents in 2009.
Ali, a Somalia native, pleaded guilty in a federal court in Portland to fraudulently obtaining an alien registration card, making false statements to get MaineCare benefits and using a falsely obtained Social Security number, according to a press release from the U.S Attorney District of Maine. Ali was granted permanent resident alien status after claiming to have lived in refugee camps in Kenya, and he used the falsely obtained card to apply for MaineCare benefits. He also allegedly concealed wages and other money he earned as executive director of Decent Home Care to receive benefits, and used the Social Security number to register his company as a MaineCare provider. He faces up to 10 years in prison for the registration card, and five years each on the other two charges, as well as fines of up to $250,000.
The company provided nonmedical, health services to disabled people, and received more than $1 million in payments from Maine in 2008. Ali said the company had 45 clients, the Sun Journal reported.
