A former waitress at Moody’s Diner in Waldoboro is suing the restaurant in federal court over allegations that she was discriminated against for religious reasons.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Allina Diaz’s lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Portland on Monday, several months after the Maine Human Rights Commission ruled in her favor, finding that there was enough evidence to support her claims.
The lawsuit claims that Diaz faced discrimination, harassment and threats of losing her job for not holding the religious beliefs of her employer, Dan Beck. Diaz is seeking to recover back pay, lost benefits, as well as receiving punitive damages.
Robert Brooks, an attorney for Moody’s, said in a statement that the restaurant “will continue to defend itself against Ms. Diaz’s allegations and maintains that it never subjected Ms. Diaz to any form of religious discrimination or retaliation.”
