Exec. admits to counterfeiting Red Sox logo, other brands

Robert Berg, the president of Corinna-based Berg Sportswear Inc., has admitted to counterfeiting sportswear containing the trademarks of popular sports teams and brands, including the Boston Red Sox, Playboy and John Deere.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Berg waived indictment and pleaded guilty on behalf of the company to a federal counterfeiting charge in U.S. District Court on Monday. While Berg is not facing prison charge, his company could be charged up to $5 million for  trafficking counterfeit goods. A sentencing date has not been scheduled.

The charge was prompted by a federal raid and investigation in 2011 over allegations that the company was counterfeiting logos of sports teams and brands on various kinds of apparel. Berg Sportswear remains in business.

In a separate case, Berg pleaded guilty in January to being an accessory to a large-scale marijuana operation in Washington County. According to court documents, Berg was asked to help escort undocumented workers from the plantation after a police raid.
