Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Gretchen Wilson has stepped down from her post to pursue retirement plans.
Wilson said she has long planned to retire in 2023, according to the Ellsworth American, and with the chamber's strategic plan recently completed, she said the timing is "perfect" for a new director to take over.
"I want to take some time, to catch my breath," Wilson said of her decision, adding, "I hope to have some sort of part-time, fun position, but I have no idea what that looks like yet."
Wilson joined the Chamber staff in 2013 as community manager and served as the executive director from 2016 to the present, according to a Jan. 19 statement by board President Tom Wheeler. Before joining the Ellsworth Chamber, she was the director of emergency services for the Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross, covering seven counties.
During her time as executive director, she helped transition to the chamber’s new building when its 40-year lease ended, helped the business community through the pandemic and improved the chamber’s programming.
Wilson said the most rewarding part of her time, however, was the growth of the Leadership Hancock County program.
When she started her tenure at the chamber, the program was just starting, but now has over 150 graduates from different economic sectors from all over Hancock County.
