An explosion over the weekend destroyed most of the Geneva Wood Fuels pellet plant in Strong, but the owner says he will rebuild.
The explosion occurred early Saturday morning and was reportedly felt miles away. No one was injured and a cause has not been found. The plant employees 25 and has been working around the clock since March manufacturing wood pellets, according to the Morning Sentinel in Waterville. The plant is owned Jonathan Kahn and Benjamin Rose, two Chicago businessmen who bought the former Forster Manufacturing building and invested millions to get the pellet mill started.
Kahn flew to Maine over the weekend to survey the damage. He told the Sentinel that he would rebuild the plant.
Combustible dust related fires and explosions are a regular occurrence in wood pellet plants.
