ExxonMobil wants out of airport fuel deal

ExxonMobil Corp. says it wants to end its agreement to supply fuel to Bangor International Airport because of the state's high tax burden, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Officials from ExxonMobil said on Tuesday that a January 2007 change in how corporations are taxed in Maine has the company paying state taxes six times higher than the profit it generates in the state, according to the Daily News. The tax change was designed to help Maine businesses, Sen. Joseph Perry, the Democratic chairman of the Legislature's Taxation Committee, told the paper. However, the change will net the state an additional $6.2 million in fiscal year 2007-2008, the paper said.

BIA Director Rebecca Hupp told the paper that the airport will need to do one of three things: Select a different supplier, work under a distributor agreement or work out a deal to maintain the relationship with ExxonMobil.
