The Falmouth-Cumberland Chamber of Commerce has asked Falmouth officials to postpone voting on a local proposal to put a 50,000-square-foot limit on the size of businesses along a section of Route 1.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the local chamber sent a letter to Falmouth's town council Monday to push back an Oct. 22 vote and consider "a resolution that works for everyone" in the town's Route 1 business district, where there is currently no size restriction for businesses.
The paper reported that five of seven councilors have expressed support for the 50,000-square-foot limit while business owners and the other two councilors favor a 90,000-square-foot size limit. The town has held public hearings on the issue since July, when a 30,000-square-foot limit was under consideration.
Late last year a Walmart expansion in that district was approved, increasing the store's footprint from 92,000 square feet to 124,000 square feet.
